Play Battleship Online
Play Battleship for free in your browser--no download, no sign-up required. Place your fleet on a grid, fire shots at the enemy board, and try to sink every ship before the computer sinks yours. The game features a smart AI opponent that hunts down your ships once it scores a hit.
How to Play
- Place your ships on the bottom grid by clicking to position each one. You can rotate ships before placing them. Ships cannot overlap or go off the board.
- Fire a shot by clicking any cell on the top grid (the enemy board). A hit is marked in red; a miss is marked in white.
- Watch the AI respond. After your shot, the computer fires back at your grid. The AI starts by firing randomly, but once it hits one of your ships it focuses on surrounding cells to finish it off.
- Sink all enemy ships to win. A ship is sunk when every cell it occupies has been hit. The game announces each sinking.
- Game over when either you or the computer has lost all ships.
Rules
- Each player has a fleet of ships of varying lengths (typically 2 to 5 cells).
- Ships are placed horizontally or vertically on a 10x10 grid. No diagonal placement.
- Players take turns firing one shot per turn.
- A shot is either a hit or a miss. You cannot fire at the same cell twice.
- A ship is sunk when all of its cells have been hit.
- The first player to sink the entire enemy fleet wins.
Tips and Strategy
- Spread your ships out. Clustering makes it easier for the AI to find multiple targets at once.
- Fire in a checkerboard pattern. The smallest ship is two cells long, so checking every other cell guarantees you find all ships.
- Focus fire after a hit. Try adjacent cells in a line to sink a ship quickly before moving on.
- Place ships away from edges. The center gives the AI more cells to search, buying you time.
- Track what you know. Misses rule out large areas of the board.
