What is Minesweeper?

Minesweeper is a classic logic puzzle that has been bundled with computers for decades. The game presents a grid of hidden cells; some contain mines and the rest are safe. Your job is to reveal every safe cell without revealing a mine. Numbers in revealed cells tell you how many mines lie in the eight surrounding cells, so you can deduce where mines are and where it is safe to click.

How to Play Minesweeper

Left-click a cell to reveal it. If it’s a mine, the game ends. If it’s empty (no adjacent mines), the game automatically reveals neighboring cells until it reaches cells that have at least one adjacent mine.
Right-click (or long-press on touch devices) to place or remove a flag on a cell. Use flags to mark spots where you think a mine is. They don’t prevent clicks; they help you remember and plan.
Win condition: You win when every cell that is not a mine has been revealed. You don’t need to flag every mine—only reveal all safe cells.

The first cell you click is always safe: the game generates the mines after your first click so you never lose on the first move.

Difficulty Levels Explained

Easy – A 9×9 grid with 10 mines. Ideal for learning the rules and getting used to number clues.
Medium – A 16×16 grid with 40 mines. More cells and more mines; logic and a bit of pattern recognition help.
Hard – A 16×30 grid with 99 mines. The classic “expert” style: lots of mines and a wide grid. Best once you’re comfortable with the game.

Higher difficulties don’t change the rules—only the grid size and mine count, so the same strategies apply at every level.

Tips & Strategies

Start from the corners or edges. The first safe click often opens a patch of cells; corners and edges have fewer neighbors, so the numbers can be easier to use.
Use the 1-2-1 and similar patterns. When you see a 1-2-1 along a row or column, the mines are often next to the 2. Learning common patterns speeds up play.
Flag when you’re sure, but don’t over-flag. Flagging every “maybe” can clutter the board. Flag cells you’re confident about; use logic for the rest.
When you’re stuck, look for “forced” moves. If the number of hidden neighbors matches the number on the cell, all those neighbors are mines. If the number of mines already flagged matches the number, the remaining neighbors are safe.
Practice on easy first. Get used to reading numbers and doing simple deduction before moving to medium or hard.

Minesweeper can still involve luck on the first click in a new area, but most of the game is logic and pattern recognition.
